Can't believe that none of the reviewers complained or even mentioned
that with the standard cables, you can't recharge and sync at the same
time! What a ripoff! So now I have to go buy a charging dock or have to
remember to charge then sync every night. That sucks.

I do love the virtual keyboard and the GPS is neat. I think I'll really
like it once I get it charged so I can sync it, but this could be a deal
breaker for me. So much for trusting the reviewers!

Where did you read that?

Huh? Why do you need a dock? All you need to do is plug the the
sync/charging cable into the iPhone on one end and the computer on the
other. You can do this while you're at the computer, using it.

I found the problem. I plugged the iPhone into a USB port on my
keyboard. Apparently, the USB ports on the keyboard are not powered. I
plugged it into a USB port on the iMac and it's working fine. Phew!

no, they are not powered. when's the last time you saw a keyboard with
an ac adapter?

On some of the newer iMacs, you *can* recharge the iPhone through the
Apple keyboard. I have no explanation for this, as it isn't true of any
other Apple systems that I've seen.

They are powered - just not enough to charge.

Both I and Malcom specifically said this was only true of newer iMacs
(and, apparently, the newer Mac Pros as well).

The keyboard USB ports do provide power, but are limited to 100 ma each
on older systems. A standard USB port can provide 500 ma. The
keyboard contains an unpowered USB hub. When the keyboard is plugged
into a standard 500 ma USB port, 100 ma is provided for each of the
keyboard USB ports and the remaining 300 ma is available to run the
keyboard and hub electronics.

The new iMacs and Mac Pros that come with the aluminum keyboard are
different. When the computer detects the aluminum keyboard on one USB
port, that USB port is switched to a high power mode. When it sees
extra power available, the aluminum keyboard can provide 500 ma on one
USB port if it detects an iPod of iPhone on that port. The other port
is limited to 100 ma.

Charging occurs without user intervention. The iPhone is charging
whenever it is connected to your computer's USB port. In other
words... If you want to sync and charge at the same time, just sync
it, after it syncs it will continue charging. Charging requires no
action on your part.

And that's the way I think it is.

that's because it's not a powered hub, as i said. when one refers to a
'powered hub' they are not referring to one that lacks an ac adapter.

Wrong. *All* USB ports provide power - just not *enough* power in this
case.

It also works on my Mac Pro using the USB port on my Apple keyboard. By
experiment, I found that this also depends on which cable I use. The cable
that came with a Belkin car adaptor works to charge my iPhone 3G but the one
that Apple supplied did not work. I suspect that the power output from the
keyboard USB is marginal for the iPhone.

Oh, oh. Apple, you watchin' dis?! A user has plugged in a GENERIC cable
to an Apple product! Be careful, Bob. If you get into a warranty
situation this might change your outcome.

How dare you! Is that Belkin licensed? Call the lawyers!

Semi-true. The aluminium keyboards do have higher powered USB ports, but
only when plugged into the newer iMacs ... try plugging an aluminium
keyboard into the older plastic iMac and you'll still have under-powered USB
ports. Although this isn't really a problem for the iPhone / iPod (unless
you need to continually unplug the cable for travelling), it is a slight
nuisance when using some Flash drives.

no i said the hub was not powered, although i didn't specifically say
'hub' since it's fairly obvious that the keyboard is a hub.

it's not word games. while it's technically true that the ports provide
power, the keyboard is not a powered hub and cannot charge an ipod or
iphone (other than the exception noted elsewhere in the thread).

No, you said nothing of a hub until just now - to quote you (and it's
clearly shown above as well):

"Apparently, the USB ports on the keyboard are not powered."

You stated the *ports* are not powered, which is indisputably WRONG.
Again, *all* USB ports provide power - some more than others. Now please
stop playing word games and just admit you were wrong. My goodness...!

No. You said "Apparently, the USB ports on the keyboard are not
powered.", to which I responded "They are powered - just not enough to
charge.".

I don't understand why you feel the need to argue on and on about this...

No you didn't. We've established you stated the ports aren't powered.
You can't change it now. I'm not arguing with you about this any more.

The point is this concept of "powered hubs" is something of a misnomer,
because, again, *all* USB ports are powered - even ports in a
"unpowered" hub. Depending on the power requirements of the device
connected, a port may or may not provide sufficient power to the device.

Wow - as others have pointed out power is the the key. I have a
keyboard with a USB port and none of the devices I have charge from it.

I'm just back from holiday and to save space I charged my iphone,
batteries, sat nav, my wife's and both my son's phones via USB cables
from my iphone charger. I just took 3 USB cables as battery charger,
sat nav and son's phones have mini USB ports.

I have been having problems with my Dell computer and Dell AIO printer.
About once a day I would try to print and I'd get a "No communication
with printer" error. A reboot would solve it.

Finally it dawned on my that this only happened when I had my iPhone
plugged into a USB port to charge. If I unplug the iPhone cable the
printer starts communicating.

I don't know if that's a power draw issue or a driver conflict.

Try plugging in other USB devices that charge another phone perhaps and
see what happens.

I had a desktop which developed a similar problem USB devices would drop
out and re-appear. After unplugging all other USB devices & trying a
different PSU I came to the conclusion it was an MB hardware fault.

I built myself a new one and he uses the old one for kids games online.
The fault is still there even after a clean XP install but it's no
longer an issue.

Guess you get what you pay for with a Dell - cheap parts that don't do the
job. Yes I know a gross generalisation without knowing the facts etc etc
but I couldn't resist!
