Improved GPS receiver in 3GS?

I think Apple may have improved the sensitivity of the GPS receiver in the 3GS model.

With my 3GS I am able to get a stable lock in about 15 seconds when standing in a first-floor,
interior bathroom that has no windows and with the door closed. The closest exterior wall is at
least 15 feet away. There is a large attic above the bathroom. The GPS Kit app shows a signal
strength of 3 out of 5 bars. I wasn't able to do this with my old 3G.

Has anyone else noticed improvements in GPS tracking?

Maybe it was the hardware.

By the way... Are you having any trouble with overheating?

No, not at all. Also, the battery life with the 3GS seems to be longer than the 3G. This was, of
course, claimed by Apple, but I'm pleased to see that it actually seems to be true.

Overall, the 3GS isn't a great leap forward from the 3G. It is nice having video recording, I like
the feature to select the focus area for still pictures, and it is significantly faster loading web
pages.

That's the way technology goes. If the voice command works well, I might
try for a new one at contract end.

Yup. It already replaces several of my devices, that would/will be
another.

I heard it takes close-up pictures, that can be very useful too.

I have found the battery life on my 3GS exceeds that claimed by Apple.

Works perfecly here, even with my Aussie accent ;)

It even knows about words in the Contacts list that start with Wr...,9eg
"Wright, with the silent 'W') which I think is clever, and my wife's
name (Jayne, with the 'y').

So far, I've been using the Voice Control for calling using the
BlueTooth in my car, and just hold the Home button without looking at
the phone. It vibrates under the thumb when it's ready for the voice
command.

It WILL work with the name straight out - eg "Mike Smith", but I find it
to be more accurate if you use the word "Call" first - perhaps it "tunes
into " your voice?

The other clever thing is that for someone for whom you have multiple
numbers, you simply specifiy which one you want to call, eg "Call Mike
Smith Mobile" - and away it goes.

The only thing I wish it did was to repeat the the command over the
Bluetooth sound system, rather than just through the phone speakers, as
it does now. The call comes through Bluetooth, but not the spoken
feedback for the voice control.

Apart from that, Voice Control works fantastically well, and is the main
reason I upgraded to the 3GS. No more having to look at the phone and
fiddle with icons and numbers to make a call in the car, which was quite
dangerous :)

Think about that statement for a minute. Sounds remarkably like
the "wow effect" is at work.

After you have finished praising it, please post your opinion
again after using voice control for several months.

Thanks.

I don't really need to think about it - that's its beauty. I have had
the 3GS since release day, and I have been using Voice Control to make
calls several times a day since that time. There have been a few false
responses - there is a short delay that gives you the chance to hit
"Cancel" - but overall, I reckon I'm getting well over 90% accuracy over
my entire Contact List.

I do make a little effort to speak and ennunciate clearly when I use it,
but it is certainly working very well for me.

I can't imagine why that would deteriorate over time....
