Since the update my phone can only make emergency calls, and itunes says
"The sim card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported"

My phone is on O2 and has never been unlocked, any ideas?

Was your computer connected to the internet when you updated, and if so, did
the phone "activate" properly? Isn't this the symptom when iTunes can't
connect to the activation server? Resyncing while the computer is connected
will probably fix it.

That certainly sounds like it isn't activated. Does iTunes "see" it when
you connect the phone to the computer, and, if so, does iTunes display the
phone's mobile number and serial number if you click on the phone's icon in
the left column?

It was connected and it downloaded the update. I can't resync it, I can only
make emergency calls. I can't even get to the home screen.

No, the only thing it displays is "The sim card inserted in this iphone does
not appear to be supported"

Sorry, I don't know what to tell you other than contact your carrier and/or
Apple.

If you connected to Itunes after the update it tries to activate the
phone, IIRC it has no text just symbols telling you to connect to
itunes. I took a number of attempts on day 1 of 3.1 to activate. It
sounds like yours has activated but there's another problem, I'd contact
O2 as the update seems to have worked but the activation failed.

Failing that pop into the apple store.

Adam,

You can force your iPhone into DFU (Recovery) mode, I'll explain how
below, while connected to the computer and with iTunes active, to
restore it.

WARNING: The contents of your iPhone will be erased (if you have a
recent backup in iTunes, it'll be restored to the latest backup).

1. Launch iTunes in your computer and connect your iPhone to the
computer (make sure the iPhone is turned on).

2. Press and hold the Sleep button (top right corner on the iPhone) AND
the Home button (front bottom center on the iPhone) together.

The iPhone will turn off, do not release the buttons until the iPhone
truens back on again and the screen shows a USB cable, an UP arrow and
a musical note on a CD, with the word iTunes underneath.

3. Let go of both buttons.

4. A message will pop up in your compter: "iTunes has detected an
iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be
used with iTunes."

5. Click "OK" on the computer and let the restore begin.

6. Sync the iPhone, after restoring, and if you had synced it before
with the same computer and under the same user account, it will restore
your data from the last backup.

NOTE: If you have synced more than one device (i.e. another iPhone or
an iPod) with that computer, makes sure that you select the right
backup.

Before you do all this, you may want to check Apple's Tech-Note:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 which is slightly different,
regarding the pressing of the buttons, than the instructions above.

While Apple's directions worked for me up to 2.2.1, they didn't for 3.0
but the ones I list did.

Good luck!

Luis.

Adam,

The SIM may have become loose. While you can remove, clean and reseat
it with the Iphone ON, I suggest you power it off before attempting
this:

Straighten a paper-clip. Insert it in the tiny hole on the top of the
iPhone, and pull the SIMS caddy straight out.

Handle the SIM by the edges, without touching its metal parts (it's OK
to touch any part of its caddy)

If you have compressed air, blow the SIM receptacle in the iPhone with
it (you can try to blow any debris with your mouth, without compressed
air; just be careful not to spit into the receptacle).

Make sure that the SIM is firmly seated on the caddy and reinsert it in
the iPhone.

Hook the iPhone to your computer and see if iTunes recognizes it
normally. If it doesn't, try again the forced restore.

Hopefully it will work, if it doesn't you may be able to get a
replacement SIM from your carrier to see if that solves the problem,
otherwise your only option would be an Apple repair facility (the rest
of the troubleshooting methods I can suggest would require either
Apple's diagnostic tools or, at worst, dissasembling the iPhone and I
don't think you want to do that yourself!)

Good luck,

Luis.

Thank you, Luis. I just followed your directions with my two free iPhone
3G units and wiped off all the stuff from the guy who gave them to me. Now
they're ready to unload onto a new fanboi....(c;]

Thanks but that doesn't work either.

It says "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occured
(20)."

I've tried it a few times.
