I had my iPAQ upgraded, but there is no media player on it. Version 7.1 won't work and I can't find v.8. I have the upgrade, but it won't upgrade without v.8. Any suggestions?

Check out this link for a stand alone version for those upgrading from PPC2000 to PPC2002.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/software/pocket/playerupdate.asp
it says that the Media Player is on the Upgrade CD and you will need to install it after the upgrade (since the upgrade was intended to ipaqs with 32mb rom, so they toook a few things out so it would fit into the older ipaqs)
Hope that helps
peace
seamonkeyps, i do have the file your looking for, i can email you it if you like.

This may also be helpful if you've tried installing the wrong version...
I've been searching for a solution to a similar problem for quite a while. I think I had inadvertenly installed Windows Media Player from the Microsoft PocketPC website. Conseqently I kept getting "player.exe" not found when I tried to run Windows Media Player. Anyway, finally cracked it today. Try this:-
1. In Microsoft ActiveSync remove all instances of Windows Media Player and Windows Media Player Update from the iPAQ and the PC.
- Open ActiveSync
- Tools menu
- Add/remove programs
- Click on Windows Media Player to highlight it (this is different to ticking it!)
- Click the Remove button
- Repeat for all instances of Windows Media Player (there could be 3 entries on some systems)2. Delete the Windows Media Player 7.1 folder from ActiveSync
- Go through My Computer or Windows Explorer to C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\
- Delete the Windows Media Player 7.1 folder3. Install Windows Media Player 8 from the Compaq Upgrade CDROM. When prompted for a location, change the "7.1" to "8". I don't think this step is necessary, but it was part of what I did so I thought it best to include it anyway!
4. After installing you will be prompted to overwrite existing files ont he iPAQ. Select Yes.
5. Windows Media Player 8 should now work and you can download the Windows Media Player 8 update from www.pocketpc.com to bring it bang up-to-date.

Yes - very good - but I don't have the upgrade CD - my iPAQ was upgraded as part of a repair and therefore it didn't come with an upgrade CD, and the application that I don't have is WMP v.8. Also, considering the problems I've had with my iPAQ, I'm not that keen on spending more money on it.

Paul,
Thank you so much! I have had this problem for 3 months and even have a problem ticket open with Compaq. Now I can play my MP3s again!
You're Awesome - how did you figure this out?
Eric

Yes Paul,
I just love you.
My Media Player 8 stopped playing (maybe due to Real Player uninstallation). For three days I've been trying to re-install the player and everything else possible. I never realized that the files in PC's active sync directory could be the cause.
Matt.
