I'm thinking about getting an IBM WorkPad Z50. (If anyone has one to sell, please email me) It's kind of a cross between a PDA and a ThinkPad - It has a keyboard, TrackPoint, VGA screen, and 2 PC Card slots, but no hard drive, Windows CE in ROM, and the "docking station" is a USB cradle to connect it to a host computer.

But what can I do with Windows CE? Am I stuck with the program that come with it? What comes with it? Can I install other software? (It has a CF slot) What software is available for Windows CE? I would love to have MS Works Suite 99, but is it compatible?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. *All* I know about Windows CE is that it's used in PDA's, It's called "Windows" like ME & 2000 Pro, and it's not the same kind of OS as other versions of Windows.

Thank you!

Windows CE is a precursor to Windows Mobile, and as you said is used mostly on PDAs, GPS devices, and commercial embedded devices.

In most setups it looks/feels like Windows 95/98. However, it will not run most Windows programs. For example, you can't just grab any version of Microsoft Office and install it. However, Microsoft has created a Windows CE version of office, and on all the devices I have seen, this is installed by default.

If you want to install other programs, you will have to find special Windows CE software. There are a ton of websites out there that offer Windows CE software (freeware and paid). While there often aren't "direct" ports of Windows programs to Windows CE (meaning, just because the software is available for Windows 98/ME/XP/Vista doesn't mean there will be a version for CE), there are often alternatives that will do the same thing. If you know of a program you need (say a scientific calculator), try searching google for "Windows CE Scientific Calculator".

If you are just looking for something to try, Windows CE devices can be found for rather cheap. If however, you need a real work device, you might consider getting a Windows based "Netbook" which comes with a full-blown installation of Windows XP/Vista.
