I got a Palm IIIc for Christmas and love it.
I did need some tech support from Palm and got good support.
Only cost was long distance.

Sites such as
http://www.brighthand.com
and
http://www.foxpop.ndirect.co.uk/
are good places for information and they
have discussion groups, too.

Foxpop is in England, but except for the
prices in pounds, you wouldn't know it.

I got a visor deluxe with the rebate for $200, and I haven't had any problems. I recommend it over the palms because they run off the Palm operating system (very easy to use, and most programs are compatible with it) and it has the IR port, (cool, because it allows to trade any downloaded programs with other Visor users), and finally the upgrade slot, which can do almost anything. I've a friend who bought the modem for the slot, so he can now check e-mail from anywhere he has a phone line. I've bought the graphing calculator upgrade, which is one less piece of equipment I need to carry with me around school. All that and not a problem yet. Oh, and I'd also recommend www.download.com for extra programs, because they have a huge selection and you can get whatever you need.

I agree on the Handspring being the best, for all of the reasons Roy had. I was given the Prism for Christmas and I've never had one of these toys, but all of my friends do. They're all jealous of all of the available options. I've bought the eyemodule digital camera, which is a lot of fun, though I'm having a few problems with it now.

One thing you might consider is how often are there new ones being developed. There has been two new Palm Pilots released since my Handspring was released making me think that the Handspring format of plug-and-play is much more stable and a good investment. Besides, you can expand it's memory from its onboard 8Mb to 16 Mb, as well as back it up onto a module in case you have some drastic problem. I haven't been having any problems, except for the recent eyemodule addition.

I love mine!

I'm a HPC man myself.

Keyboard, more fatures than the Palm, lost of upgrade potential and you get decent RAM and Processors witht them.

PCMCIA slt (for modem or netowrking, or even memory)
CF Slots some with Type on and other wth type 2

IR, Com port can be used for printing as well as sync.

Good sized and readable screen, better for the internet and high levels of productivity. New ones hav 16 bit colour.

Word, Excel, Power Point, Access and Outlook all formatable, so no baby text systems like note pad, notepad if you want it of course.

You can play Doom on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Networkable

Has its own Atlas, Tweaking package, Registry!!!, Paint, Sound recorder, MP3 compat an has headphones as well as a speaker....

Decent Games! Pocket reader for e-texts, download the news, read the news, Show off on the train...

Looks Cool

Need I say more!!!!!!!

HP Jornada 720!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By far, the Handspring Visor. It's the best. I've had mine for a year and no problem. It's fully expandable, easy to use, runs off the Palm OS, and sync's up with no problem. I hope that Handspring will eventually have a "trade-up" program, I'd love to get the newer model....

What ever you do, do not deal with Compaq. They are just terrible. They have a great concept but it ends there. And they are just the WORST with support.

Well, i have a Visor Deluxe. Seems that I'm having difficulties in upgrading the PALM OS. My OS version is only 3.1H but some of the software require 3.3 or higher. Anyone can tell me or if anyone have the specific file can send to my email. I will appreciate that.

Palm Units are better... I've owned both (for comparison) and tossed the Visor back. For starters, the Visor did'nt, allow for firmware upgrades. This is important, especially if the mfg finds alittle something or adds alittle something to the OS and you'd like to update your unit. Second: The later Visor units that do allow firmware upgrades, well, Visor failed to advise there customers they could only run the update engine twice before it torched the Prom. How nice of them. I have a friend who went through that mess, but now there over to the Palm because of it. Third, in comparing the two units side by side, the Palm had a better display, both in clarity and in backlighting. (FYI-If you get a used Palm like a IIIxe, learn the DOT commands-special features, that allows you to switch the backlighting modes) Anyways, Finally, the so called special DateBook software was'nt something Visor made up, as I found in my searches, it's a software add-on that the company included in there OS and can be purchased for any Palm. On a different note, just to be fair, I also have a friend who has the new color Visor and had a chance to play with it alittle, and its a nice unit, but expensive. Also consider the optional Springboard equipment vs what is available for the Palm to see if there is anything you might use now or in the future.

U might say I m silly. But my best recommendation is 3Com Palm M505. This is the best PDA is EVER seen! unlimited expandable memory module, Palm PIX, 65k colour, thin like Palm Vx and light weight plus lots of accessories. Lastly plenty of software support. A new hybrid of Palm Vx. I would want to get one for myself. Go to www.palm.com and see for yourself.
