Comment: Hi All, Im struggling to understand the difference between (or the relationship between) GPRS and WAP. I understand GPRS provides G2 connectivity speeds and WAP is a specification of protocols for wireless communication, but do PDA's/Phones use WAP or GPRS? Or are they used in sync with eachother? If someone could explain using the OSI layers it would really help my understanding! Thanks a ton!

Reply: (edit)GPRS and WAP are very2 different. in analogy, GPRS is the highway and WAP is the vehicle that uses the highway. See the difference? Most WAP-enabled phones uses WAP to access the Internet. But, PDAs usually equipped with full OS and full web browser suite which allow the access to the Web using the standard HTTP and HTTPS protocols. BTW, you don't want to access the Web using WAP - too "texty", if you know what I mean. :) OSI? Basically, it is the standard communication layers (7 layes in all). Each has its own purpose and function. This one is a long topic to cover.

Reply: (edit)Thanks CyberArachnid. Just for clarification, I fully understand OSI and was just asking to classify the protocols using that, but your analogy did that for me! Thanks makes perfect sense now! ;)~ Last question - is there another access protocol like GPRS used in the UK?? Thanks

Reply: (edit)Unlike Japan which uses docomo, GPRS and EDGE are used widely everywhere in the world. Looking forward for 3G services soon. :-)
