Hello, everyone!
I've just found these forums because I'm stumped as to the solution to a MS Access/PDA problem I have... I figure that there's lots of people on here that know the answer right off, so here goes:
I have a lovely little application, created in MS Access, that just allows data inputting into tables using forms. It's quite detailed, with some layers and relationships, but is basically just an application to order things a little using forms: i.e.
One Company has many Offices.
One Office has many routers.
One Office has many switches.
One Office has many servers.See? It just does an inventory of what network hardware a company has, and which office that hardware belongs to. This application works fine; the engineers go out into the field, take notes and data input when they get back to HQ.
However, to save LOTS of time (and the rainforests!) it would be better to ditch pen and paper altogether; have the engineers carry PDAs that have this MS Access application on them and then do some sort of data import into the main HQ computer later on at the end of each shift.
The PDAs don't need reports generating, etc, they JUST need to be able to use their application to data input using the familiar interface they've learned on the HQ's central PC.
Now, since I know nothing about PDAs, and after much research that gets me even more confused than when I began, I:
1) Would like to know even IF PDAs are capable of running MS Access. If so, which ones? Would they be cut-down versions or full applications with most features of the PC Access?
2) Which makes/models would do this best? I'm looking for personal recommendations for this type of thing... companies tell you their products will do what you require but it's usually better to get someone not affiliated with a company to point out good AND bad things... especially since if we settle on a certain PDA many of them will be bought (I don't want the company to fork out ££££S for a PDA to find it doesn't do what we need!).
3) Any other important stuff I should think about?
Please note that I've never used a PDA before, I'm in over my head but have no choice about this, and maybe some of these questions a wee bit silly, but have patience please :)
Thanks for any help with this!
Sarah Anne.
