I was wondering is it possible to buy a PDA and use it as an mp3 player - like an Ipod? Or won't a PDA be able to hold much music?

You can, but I would recommend buying a compact flash card or sd/mmc card as the internal storage on most pdas would limit you to about 4 songs.
However the costs of a pda + extra storage might be too high in comparison unless you use the pda for other stuff as well. If you just want to listen to music, i'd buy a dedicated mp3 player.
http://www.expansys.com/ has a good range of pdas as well as mp3 players

I use my Tungsten T3 as a MP3 player. Every morning, when I HotSync, my SD card is loaded with about 100 random songs from my library.
