Trouble synching Palm Vx to iBook

I am having trouble synching a Palm Vx to an iBook. The Palm and iBook's Palm Desktop software are the latest versions recommended for a Palm Vx (OS 3.5.3) and (4.2.1.A desktop).
I am using a serial cradle that has a serial to USB connector to get to the iBook. I know that the serial cradle works with my HP laptop running XP. Not sure why I am getting an error message that says the Palm Desktop cannot make a connection to the Palm.
