What OS does you palm III has?
Minimum needs to be PalmOS 3.3 for using IR

Ok, do you want to do an IR sync or are you trying to do a Serial cradle sync? Your Question was unclear. Pixie is correct about the Palm needing at least 3.3 OS for an IR sync, but a cradle sync has no requirements. Let me know which you are attempting.

if you DO have 3.3 or later, make sure that your hotsync settings are set on com port 5 (i think IR uses a virtual com5 or something)
double click on the IR tray icon, and under the box 'enable IR' it should say 'IR enabled on com x' etc...

Whatever com port that is, make sure hotsync has that selected for it's local serial com port. Then make sure the hotsync on the palm has 'IR to palm' selected. Again, you won't have this option without 3.3 or later.. Then hit sync whilst palm is in range, and wala!

The problem was fixed on my WinME laptop after observing that the CMOS IR setting was for COM2 and was not changeable. COM2 was not available for a setup choice for HotSync, but COM4 was an option. I unticked the IR sync option and setup for serial on COM4 and it now works!

This may be attributable to the IRQ of Com4 and Com3 often being the same (IRQ3).

Browny points to my colleague Alvin who suggested this!

Just got this to work with ME & Palm III by:
1) Unchecking "InfraRed" in the Hotsync menu
2) Checking Local Serial
3) Going into the Control Panel/System/Device Manager and making sure the COM port emulation was ON for the IR port (it was off by default)
4) Changing to IR on the Palm and clicking Hotsync - works like a charm!

So the moral is - ignore Palm's tech notes and figure it out the hard way......
