Hello, this is just to share some information on how to make Sony Clie N760C handheld excecute hotsync using the USB port under a Windows XP system.
I have to say that it was pretty hard for me to get it done, I looked for information everywhere (incluiding this forum) so I believe this should help you guys.
You will have to do the following:
1. First, install the newest version of Palm Desktop (v. 4.0.1)because previous ones would not work (If you have an older version already installed you have to fully uninstall it). You can download the newest version here:
http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/bin/support/support.cgi?whichone=2&installfile=cliepd401.txt&downloadfile=CLIEPD401.EXE
2. Once installed on your pc you have to install an update patch to make make your usb port work using Windows XP. You can download that patch from here:
http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/bin/support/support.cgi?whichone=2&installfile=pdt401-patch.txt&downloadfile=PDT401-PATCH.EXE
3. Then connect your handheld through the USB port and hit the hotsync button, it will recognize it automatically and one of two things will happen:
a) It will open the "Add New Hardware" wizard so you have to select all the devices and find Sony Handheld, then browse for the driver in your c:/program files/sony handheld/usb driver/ directory and select the driver that appears there. Then you click finish and it will not recognize the device yet.
b)It will not recognize the device and will send a USD error message, as well as an "USB port is being used by another application" in the handheld.
4. No matter if you experienced option a or b, you have to this to make it work: Go to "My Computer" icon and right clik, then click on "Manage" and it will open the Computer Management window. Then Select "Device Manager" under "System Tools" and look for your "Sony Handheld" (or could appear as "Handspring Handheld") in the right side of the window. You will probably see a wellow exclamation mark at the begining of the frase, that means the device is not working. Then select that "Sony Handheld" device, right click on it and select "Uninstall", yes, erase it! You shouldnt see it there anymore to continue.
5. Close the Device Manager, perform a hotsync and viola! It should work!
If this doesnt work for you then I'm sorry, it did for me. And also, if you see that USB error again, perform 3, 4 and 5 again and it should work.
Hope it works for other clie models. In that case you should select the update patch of number 2 that corresponds to your model. Select it here:
