I am looking for a PDA that offers a low cost way to use it more like a laptop/tablet. If I had USB and serial I could get rid of the laptops/tablets. Bluetooth isn't practical since I work in a large plant, 802.11b would be better and a plus. A VT100 type of terminal connection is one of the things I use. A lan ethernet connection is a must.

Is there a PDA that you would recommend that fits that? Any ideas like quality and ease of use would also help. Thanks.

Also is there any x window support for pocketpc or palmos?

You made a very broad request :-}. First of all, what is your budget? You can get a Dell Axim for a little over 200 atleast the last time I checked. That is one of the best valued PDAs made. I'm not sure if it has a wireless connection built in but I am pretty sure Dell makes an add-on for it. They have add-ons for just about anything else you can think of.

If your looking to use a PDA like a laptop I would suggest a portable keyboard. It is very difficult to type using an on screen keyboard. You should also consider the small screen size of a PDA. That is another of it's problems. It is difficult to work with at times. In general, pocket pcs seem to have a larger screen but only slightly. Pocket PCs are also somewhat larger than Palms if that is a factor.

If you compare Palms to Pocket PCs just by the box it will seem that Pocket PCs blow away Palms. However, they are very close. The Palm OS uses much less resources then windows CE. Therefore, it does not need the hardware a Pocket PC does.

I hope this helps. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Thanks for the reply.
I have been searching for solutions. It seems that the usb and serial compact flash usually only work with PocketPC. I found an NEC P300 with USB and CF and MMC for cheap. The wireless is another $58. If it doesn't work then my niece will get a gift.
