Subject: Palm m515 won't Hotsink on one PC OS: XP Home CPU/Ram: P4 2.4/1G RAM

Comment: My Palm Tungsten T and my wife's M515 both Hotsync on my work PC (NT 4.0, serial cradle, P2 233 192Mb RAM). On my home PC only the Tungsten T works (P4 2.4 1G RAM, USB cradle). The m515 comes up with "The Connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again", after a minute or so. I have tried all Palm Desktop software versions and all settings that I can think of - no change! I am baffled - any ideas please!

Reply: (edit)Sorted! It was a fault in the Palm m515. I tried it on a couple of different pc's that have no problems with palm comms and found that it only works with serial cradles. I have obtained a serial cradle for my pc and now my Tungsten T and my wife's m515 both sync ok (although a bit slow!).

Reply: (edit)i have a very simmilar problem. i have a m515 that came with a usb cradle and a palm desktop installation cd. i was not able to communicate with the handheld so the palm support person told me to log on as administrator and reinstall the desktop app. it turns out that the cd i got had palm desktop version 3.0 that did not support usb in the first place. i downloaded and installed version 4.1 from download.com - first in the administrator account where i was given the option to select "USB" for the connection and it showed up in the task bar hotsync icon, but synchronization from the cradle or the palm hotsync prog never succeeded. i was told to install as admin because of an issue in windows xp concerning com port configuration. after relogging as a user, i found that the prog did not show up and installed it again. here too i saw the "local usb" marked with a V in the taskbar icon but synchronization always failed and each time i saw a "unknown usb device" pop up in device manager with a yellow question mark, and the device vannished after the synchronization attempt failed and stopped. i suppose you are right. m515 probably does not work with a USB cradle. i am left with two puzzling questions: 1) why was i given a cd in the Palm package who's desktop app version does not match the usb cradle? 2) why did the palm m515 have a usb cradle in the package if its not compatible for synchronization and installation to it ?
