iPAQ wifi connects, but no internet

HP 6315 iPaq. Connects to wifi network; signal stregth good; authentication set to "open"; data encryption set to "disabled".
wifi goes from "available" to "connecting" to "connected"; yet when connected, the usual access to the Internet (and the preliminary wifi-provider's login page) is not available. The error message for any web address, including decimal IP addresses, is this:
