Hotsync Problems

I have a Sony Clie PEG-TJ37. I am trying to hotsync to a PC via a USB chord. An error comes up - "The selected port COM1 is not available. Hotsync manager will open port when it becomes available." I have installed(and reinstalled) palm desktop software. I also need to know how, and if it is possible, to send pictures via hotsync or infrared. Any help would be VERY much appreciated.
