Comment:

I have a new Windows XP (Home) machine. (Pentium IV 1.9GHz, 1GB RDRAM, 40GB HD). Using the Sony Clie PEG-S300 with USB connection.
In order to make it work with Windows XP, I installed CLIEPD401.exe file as instructed by Sony's website. Since I have the S300, I installed the USB Switcher as per Sony's website. I followed all of the instructions exactly.

When I plugged the USB connection from the cradle into the machine, Windows recognized the USB device and indicated it was working appropriately. While TruSync was attempting to configure it could not complete because the PDA gave the following error message: "Unable to initiate HotSync operation because the serial port is in use by another application."

When I right-click on the HotSync icon in my system tray there is a check mark next to "Local USB".
The device manager indicates that there are no conflicts and that the USB is working appropriately.
There is no external hub, etc.
I can find no other devices that seem to be using the USB.
I've made sure that "USB switcher" and "HotSync Manager" are launched prior to attempting a HotSync.

I've rebooted several times, yet I still cannot HotSync. I've even tried another USB port. My other USB peripherals work fine. I had not even installed them prior to attempting this, however. The PDA was the first software to be installed on my new machine.

Please help. I've grown quite dependent on this lovely little PDA! It worked great on my Windows 98 machine. I thought that the release of Sony's update would make it work on Windows XP. I'm guessing that there is some little setting that I'm missing and that there's nothing actually wrong. Please be patient with me and help! I need it to sync!

OK, here are more details:

On the PC: Both the "USB switcher" and "HotSync" are running in the systray. When I click the "HotSync" icon, "Local USB" is checked (selected). This is the way it worked on my old machine and is the way Sony says to do it.

On the PDA under "connection setup" under "HotSync" the options are as follows:
57600bps Device (1)
57600bps Device (2)
57600bps Device (3)
Direct Serial
IR to a PC/Handheld

The default has been "direct serial". I had not changed this setting since using the PDA successfully via the USB on my old PC (Windows 98). Out of desperation, I have now created a custom
"connection setup" where I was able to select "USB to PC" as the connection method. The end result is the same: I receive an error message on the PDA stating: "Unable to initiate HotSync operation because the serial port is in use by another application".

It's interesting that when the PDA is attempting a HotSync, it says, "connecting with the desktop using Direct Serial". This is what it always said before while using USB on my old PC! And it never gave me an error message??!! I can't make it say anything different, even though I created a "custom" connection setup. Does anybody have any ideas as to what's going on???

Matt

just after I sent you the message I broke the code. I installed the usb to the back of the machine instead of the front two ports and for some unknown reason it worked. While checking status of ports my machine said of the 3 ports only one was available. Anyway the usb in the back of my machine was the key. FYI

I had this problem too. Here's a solution I found but I haven't tried it myself. Still, might be worth posting...

First, you MUST have the Palm Desktop update off of the CLIE website. Follow the directions - SPECIFICALLY about the *custom* usb switcher install for the S300. After that is installed - it's about a 50/50 chance that XP will select the WRONG usb driver and blow it. If that happens, and you are geting a "Serial port is in use by another device" error - then you have to do this:

Open your Device Manager.
Attempt to sync the device with Device manager open - when the device appears on the list (sony PEG {com6 or 7 usually}) right click and select "update Driver"
When the update driver wizard appears - you MUST select "Install from specific location(advanced)"
Point it at your Program Files|Sony Handheld|USB_Driver folder and select the Sop1kUSB.inf file - select open.
It will pop up the XP driver verification "driver has not passed... " error - hit install anyway.
Sync again and you should be all set!

I am using Win98 so my troubles haven't been exactly the same, however, I have found that when I have had a Hot Sync failure, the fix was a soft reset of the CLIE. Someone might find this usefull. It took me quit awhile to figure it out.

BRAVO Cybergangster!!!
After countless hours upon hours of trying thousands of suggestions, YOUR solution WORKED!
Those idiots at Clie` should hire you. At least they can get someone who knows what they are doing.
They probably didnt want to tell us that solution b/c it isn't digitally signed.
Thanks a million!

Wow, cybergangster, that looks EXACTLY (and I do mean word for word) like the post I left!!!

;) By all means, spread the good word.

...but please give credit where credit is due...

For anyone else having this problem, reference the thread "WinXP and Sony CLIE S300" started by Baro, it's a few posts down.

peace,

Dan

Thanks Cybergangster,

I've been fighting this one for a while. I'd read and tried all sorts of other things, but this one worked!

How did you ever figure that one out??!!
