Does anyone have a good workaround solution
to hotsyncing the 610 Clie with Windows XP?
There seems to be a USB switching driver that has not been updated by Sony.

I've run into the same trouble with my pegs300. I've updated all the software that needs to be installed but I get a com port error when I try to Hot Sync.

It runs fine on win ME. Fortunately, I configured my PC to dual boot ME or XP and I can still use my peg.

I'm thinking of calling microsoft.

I gave up after MANY attempts to emulate others. I removed Windows XP and allowed WIN ME to be reinstalled as my os. Too Bad!
I will just check into the chat rooms now and see if a fix has been found. I did leave my email with Sony to be notified.

PEG-S300 and winXP professional. Sam problem as above. Called Pam and Sony. Palm does not support Sony's Clie (naturally) eventhough they wrote the OS.
Sony's rep just gave me the company routine of, No sir we donot support S300 with WinXP, but you may want to put down another $500 and get our new T415. By the way we donot have any plans for supporting xp with our PDA's anytime soon.
So, I guess I am converting to WIN-CE platform, or the old trusty notebook. Getting tired of wasting time with these people!

I have the same problem as all of you, and I found the solution. You have to contact Sony and get a Palm OS upgrade to Version 4.1, and download the new Palm Desktop. This should solve your problems.

I just got the problem solved, I have a PEG-S500C, the color version of the S300. first, go download and install the newest palm desktop for clie from here: http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/clie/winxp-support.html
make sure to choose costom install, and CHECK THE USB SWICHER!

and then, when windows says that the driver may not be compatible with XP, choose "continue anyway". if you didn't choose it, or didn't see it. goto device manager, hit hotsync, you should see clie detected under "Ports (COM & LPT)". now right click on that, choose update driver, and choose advanced, then choose "don't search, I will choose the driver to install", then browse to the folder you installed the palm desktop, usually "c:\program files\sony handheld\USB_Driver", then click ok, now you should see that compatibility prompt, choose continue anyway, you are set.

enjoy :)

After 4 hours on the phone with Sony!!!!
They do have a work around for this issue. I was so pissed off at this point I failed to write down the process, sorry, but if you call Sony's support line and just keep insisting they will finally escalate you to someone who can resolve the issue. I do rember that I did not have to install any updates, but did have to follow a very convoluted install procedure. If you do not tweek it in just the right order you have to start over from scratch.
