cant sync, no matter what i do

i cant seem to sync my Palm Vx with my laptop. i have no serial ports and 2 usb ports. i just recently tried (and failed) to connect a Keyspan USB Serial Adapter. thinking of buying a generic USB Serial Converter instead, so as to bypass any need for installing extra device drivers. any help would be more than greatly appreciated!!
