Can sync problem be the cable?

I have 2 handhelds and both won't sync. They're hooked to the same computer; I tried one on another computer, and all settings appear correct. Could the usb and serial cable both have gotten damaged?

most likely will not be the cable unless it was phisically damaged.

do you soft reset daily, if not starrt doing it 90% of sync problems are due to not soft reset
