Hello! I am an absolute lamer regarding PDA's so I'd like to find out can a PDA be used as a mobile phone? F.x. how does it exactly connect to internet - directly or via something else (a mobile phone). If I can use a PDA as a phone I'll throw away my mobile :) However if I will have to drag along both - I'll resemble a mule!

Well yes and no.

What you would need is a 2 in 1 "smartphone" like a treo 600 or treo 650 (this is a full PDA with phone in one) or a nokia 6260 (a mobile with MANY PDA funtions but no touch screen).

The BEST right now (summer 2005) is the HTC Magician aka QTEK S100, MDA Compact or XDA mini, for about US$400, see it here .

And to connect to the net you can do it one of 3 ways: WiFi (hot spot), Bluetooth (home or office LAN) or via cell phone/modem (anywhere, but you need a wireless networking plan).

Happy gadget hunting!

Peace.

- Yeah, you just stick any SIM card in the back of it. The internet access depends on who you have the SIM contract with and what kind of plan, a wireless plan can run as low as $US10-15 per month nowadays cause there is a lot of competition.

Here are a few links of the magician:

- I however own a Nokia 6260 Smartphone, black, here:

I like it A LOT but, the screen is kinda small.

The treo 600 is pretty cheap by now if you don't have much money (about US$200), but it's 2-3 year old technology, try to save a little for something nicer.

There is a lot to chose from so do some reaserch first.

The models I previously mentioned are very ok but these are also very nice:

- Nokia 6230i
- Samsung SGH-D500
- Nokia 6680
- O2 XPhone II
- I don't like sony/ericson phones or sony anythings.

Peace.
