Ok this is REALLY DAMN FRUSTRATING!!!! If anyone can help I am in debt for life!
My Dell Axim 5 is not being detected by Active Sync. I have ActiveSync 3.6 installed plus Outlook 2000 installed on Windows XP Pro. I am trying to connect via USB.
Heres the problem. Everytime I try to ActiveSync to recognize the PDA, it doesnt at all, but the New Hardware Wizard pops up every DAMN TIME!! wanting to install drivers for "new usb device". This is absurd! I dont have any drivers for the damn thing, its just supposed to automatically be recognized by ActiveSync.
~SIGH~ (i am quite frustrated)
The big kicker is that on this exact system, I was running win98 SE only one week ago before I upgraded to XP PRo, and ActiveSync worked fine!
Please any suggestions?????
(by the way, I have tried to let the new hardware wizard just install the usb device as some generic but it doesnt have any specific driver for it and it cant even figure out what it is, so it just remains a ?usb device in device manager)

First of all Window XP is a problem...I am also using it. Try right clicking on "my computer", then go to "properties" and "device manager". I believe you have to delete the USB device or Windows CE USB then reboot your computer. (also do a soft reset on your iPAQ before starting to hook up again) I have seen this problem before and that is what "they" said to do. You may want to call Active sync tech support.

This response sent quite a bit after the question was posted, so don't know that it will be helpful, or found.
I have a Dell x5 that had the same problem. I'm not sure why, but I'll tell you what happened with mine.
Start->Settings->System (bottom tab)->About->Device (bottom tab). The "Device Name" seems to be what it looks at. Mine started out as "Pocket_PC", then at some point seems to have changed to "Dell_Axim", which confused Activesync. So ActiveSync (which is about the crappiest app I can imagine) looked at it as a new device and created a folder in My Documents called Dell_Axim My Documents. All seems fine now, and I guess I could've changed the name back to "Pocket_PC", but the name makes more sense now anyway.
Look at the folder it's already created in My Documents, and change the Device Name of the Dell to that. I think it will stop looking at it as a new device.
Hope this helps.
Btw, http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/ has a much better Pocket PC and special Dell section than this post does. You may want to check that out as well.
