I am trying to access high speed internet through my LAN at work (without calling the pro's out- who charge a mint).
I have hooked up the laptop, copied the ip settings from cmd promt (ipconfig /all). And the comp is on the LAN. I can also browse any webpage which is directly connected to our local server. I.e i work in a division of a university, and can browse any webpage on the uni.
However, i cannot connect to any outside webpage. It says "webpage connected" and tries to load, but nothing happens.

Sounds like someone's got you blocked from getting outside your intranet. I'd talk to your university's IT department about it-sounds like you're being blocked from somewhere from going outside of the LAN.
