Hi guy's just writing to let you know you don't have to have a high spec machine to run OS2 Warp V4. I'm using a 486DLC40-with Co-pro 20megs of ram, 1 eg graphics card and a 500 meg harddrive. It's not fast and the graphics are great but it can be done with a little patients.

Reminds me a bit of the first machine I put OS/2 on: a PS/2 70, consinsting of a 120 MB HD, 12 MB of Ram and a 386DX20. The thing had no more than standard VGA for graphics (640x480x16co) and I started out with a 12" monitor.
While OS/2 2.x was sort of okay, Warp 3 was much better (only in comparison though). By the time Warp 4 came out, I was down to 6 MB Ram (memory expansion card had died). That's when I reached the end of feasability for that system concerning OS/2. I now have it set up with OpenDos 7.03 and still use it for some nostalgic Retrogaming.

I normally run DOS 6.22, Windows 3.1(with updates) and Calmira as the shell. This is a
good machine for this software. I use it for surfing ,e-mail,games etc.

I've just loaded OS2 V4 on a 46DX2/66 (over-clocked)with a VESA Cirrus Logic video card and it hums along. I'd like to get some experience on a non-MS OS with a GUI,that's why I'm playing with it. The good thing is OS2 has DOS and Windows 3.1 support built in and the OS2 command line acts similar to DOS. Also it is a tru 32-bit OS.
I'd like to give Linux ago but I find the commands to be differcult to master.

I also like tinkering with older PCs and take them to there maximim. They are free/cheap and easy to work with.

Yeah, it's fun tinkering around with old hardware.
A buddy recently gave me a nice, big, fat AT tower case which had sorta burned out - time to what can be salvaged.

Btw, what's "Calmira"?

See http://www.calmira.org/. Calmira is a very good Win3.x shell, giving a Windows9x/NT
look and feel. It has some features that are better than win9x and it is free!! I use it on all my machines from the trusty DLC to the Celery 400.

I've been told it also works in Win-OS2(This is an OS2 forum after all).

It's a good way to put a modern style interface on an older machine and I recommend it.

Have some good stories about that too!

I remember getting a game from a friend which neeeded 6 MB DPMI to run under DOS. I tried it on an old 386 DX/40 with 4 MB ram on board and warp 3 running on it, and YES it worked fine, just say to OS/2 under the dos session, give the application 6 MB DPMI and it works, and fast too. When the system was later upgraded to 16 MB ram it was also possible to run the game under dos (emm386 etc.) BUT under os2 it ran faster with 4 mb phys mem than under dos with 16 mb mem.
About calmira, seen it, been there, done it. Indeed, the WIN9x GUI to your OS/2 operating system (Having the one thing bill gates couldn't do, making win9x crashproof) it works fine, also with the win32s 1.25 extension, so it's possible to run most of the early win95 applics on an os/2 machine. NOTE the applics might run a bit slow (about as slow as win95) but the system is in overall more stable. BTW, I have an 286!! running the calmira interface and thus lookign like win95 COOL. How this is done ? easy, take win 3.1 instead of 3.11, with 2 MB or more ram and install it on the 286, then put calmira on top and away we go. Doesn't go fast though, but works !

Take care and lots of fun with the only OS worth spending your money on (OS/2)
