os/2 warp3 vs warp4 ?

what are the differences between them ?
like program / driver compatability

what would be best for general use ?

I was told theres a new os/2 based on warp 3 would that be just as compatable ?

also is it posible to install os/2 on a secondary partition
example

primary
c:\ 2 gig windows fat 32
extended
d:\ 30 gig drive fat32
e:\ 8 gig os/2 hpfs
???

thanks

I believe OS/2 v4 and v3 needed to be in the first 1024 part of the HD.

Also, you will need an updated IBM1S506.ADD (Hard drive driver) for that large HD or use Daniela's HD Driver (DANIS506.ADD).

IBM's comes with a Fixpack 15 and Daniela's is on hobbes FTP.

I would go with Warp v4 since it is easier and better to work with and drivers and more abundant.

If you want, you can go with ECS as an upgrade from Warp v4.

BTW, this is my HD setup. I got two 40GB IDE, using Daniela's HD Drivers:

Disk1:
Boot Manager
C: - Win98 2GB
D: - W2KPro (NTFS) 3.5GB
E: - FAT16 2GB
F: - FAT16 2GB
I: - HPFS 26GB

Disk2:
G: - NTFS 10GB
H: - Warp Server for E-Biz (HPFS) 4GB
J: - JFS 24GB

Warp 4 has an enhanced GUI (WPS) and all network stuff like TCP/IP, Peer Client etc. are already included. Warp4 chips with VoiceType and Bonuspak.
Driver compatability between W3 and W4 is the same except for newer 32bit driver, these will only work with Warp4 Fixpak13 and up.
I recommend Warp4 because its more current.

You can install on a extended partition, but you need to install the OS/2 Bootmanager to do so. You may want to check out my updt package
(http://www.os2usr.org/w4bootcd.html) to update the Warp4 install CD with latest driver and it will also made the CD bootable.

do the fix packs need to be aplied one by one
e.g
install 1 then 2 then 3

or will the newest fixpack just have all the files i need ??

thanks

Fixpaks are for the base os, then tcp/ip, then some other stuff, like java, device drivers... etc..

Atleast that is how I remember them (I got WSeB 4.5 and it is that way)... pain in the butt, but you have to do it.

Fixpaks are seperated by components, like Base OS, TCP/IP, Peer to name the main.
Installing them is not that difficult, my
updt package is already enabled for installing Base OS Fixpaks ;-)

I decided to go with warp3
mainly because its the only one i could get hold of only cose £9 with sealed bonuspack

I was suprised that it actually detected my 40 gig hdd and its partitions not fstype (this makes me think someone could have updated the origianl disk`s maybe ?)

I put in a extra 3 gig hdd for os/2 I can get past most disks after disk 6 or 7 it reboots and when it starts up just after os/2 logo they systems gives me a black error screen (sorta simler to the blue screen on death

any help please ?

thanks

First press Alt-F2 at boot this will show driver loading. I recommend to update the IDE driver get latest idedasd package or the dani driver (Warp3 can't handle drives bigger than 2GB out of the box).

The easiest way to apply fixpaks is of course from the hard disk. I use a useful little program called simply fix (sfix3.zip, I think), on hobbes or similar sites, which provides a gui and instructions for automatically unpacking and applying or backing out of fixpaks, provided you have enough disk space to store quite a lot of temporary files.

It includes the bizzarely named corrective service facility you mentioned (cs_141.exe), but for fp40, I found that csf144 was needed, so just unpack it into the sfix directory and let it overwrite relevant files. If not using english os/2, you need the csf in the appropriate language. Applying the fixpak should then be quick and easy (touch wood, I only experienced a trap once).
