My friend was given her office computer, an ibm intel 100mhz 1/2 gig hd. i wanted to load either win98 or winMe into it. The machine is 657635f, system serial #23k8486 and system board identifier qk28g498c65. I posted on the win98 bb and was told it was a land fill product. The only board it had was an ibm auto 16/4 token ring isa, #kim73 036059, I'm not sure but think this is a network card. I was hoping someone was familiar with this computer as when I boot up it has the ibm logo then asks if I want to go into bios f1 or esc to jump out of the bios. When I hit esc the screen goes black and the number 1962 shows up in the upper left corner. I can't access A drive or go beyond the black screen. I went to the ibm website and each question seemed to have 40,000 answers for each question. I'm sure I will get more positive answers from this site as I have had with win98 questions.
Thanking you for any help you can give me,
charlie

Charlie,
That number you mentioned is one of many error codes that IBM incorperates into its bios. It lets you know that something is not installed right, or that the computer does not recognize something. If you go to a search engine like google.com, you can type in the model of the computer and see what hits come up. For example: If the computer is a PS/2, then you type "PS/2 Model ? error codes", or if it is an Aptiva, then "Aptiva Model ? error codes". You can fill in the question mark with the actual model. If you type the quotation marks, it will most likely narrow your search to what you want to find. I hope this advice is useful.
Good Luck,
Tboy

Go to IBM website at

www.pc.ibm.com to search for the machine type and information. IBM still keeps a lot of information of older hardware.
