Comment:

I am a complete OS/2 newbie, but I wanted to know if it was possible to transfer data (txt files) from an old OS/2 machine (with only a floppy drive) to a Windows NT machine.

I have to do this for work, and nobody seems to know anything about what version of OS/2 the machine has.

Can I copy the files onto a floppy and the use that floppy to copy the files onto Windows?

Anybody know a resource where I can find out how to copy files from OS/2? (can I use GUI or will I have to use some DOS-like command prompt?)

Thanks.

If you have a boat load try using a null modem cable and a terminal program.
Here is a link that might be able to help you to figure out what ver of OS2 you are working with.

Check the dates on some of the system files and read through the link I posted and that should help you to narrow it down.

Keep the old stuff running

With a Null Modem cable (as suggested above) you can use something like ZOC (on both machines no less) to do the transfer. v4.15 is the last OS/2 version (available in their FTP section).

But via floppy, you will have no problems transferring the *files* (but you will lose any long file *names* - thus "My Long File Name.txt" may become something like "MY_LONG_.TXT")

Hence using something like ZOC and a null modem cable is better (assuming you have long file names - which will then be preserved).

Another alternative (assuming both machines have TCP/IP support) is to set up an FTP server on one of the machines (and an FTP client on the other), and then transfer the files via FTP.

For OS/2, you can use Peter Moylan's FTPd:
http://www.pmoylan.org/pages/os2/Ft...

It's pretty easy to use and configure. Create a directory, unzip the files, start it, open the setup utility, create an account and point it to the directory or drive you want to copy from, close the setup utility (more detailed instructions are on the site if you need them).

For Windows, you can use almost any FTP Client (except Window's built in one), including FileZilla, WinFTP, or the FireFTP plugin for Firefox. Point the FTP client to the IP of the OS/2 machine, log in (assuming you set up a username and password when you created the FTP account on the OS/2 box) and transfer away! Long file names will be preserved via this method as well.
