Subject: Problems with Tokenring under OS/2
OS: OS/2 Warp4
CPU/Ram: Pentium3 1,26Ghz 128Mb SD
Comment:
Hello, I am a novice at OS/2 and am having some Problems:
First of all the Hardware:
PentiumIII 1,26GHz
128 Mb SD-RAM
20Gb HDD
While Installing I had a problem with the amount of HDD space so I have only a 2Gb Partition under OS/2
The Main Problem is with the Token Ring Network. I installed the IBM Token-Ring PCI Family Adapter, This is what was installed on the previous Computer and that worked. Then I Configured the MPTS

IBM TOKEN-RING PCI Family Adapter (IBMTRP.OS2)
0 - IBM OS/2 NETBIOS
0 - IBM TCP/IP

I inserted the Network Adapter Address according to the given Specs.
--Reboot--
Then I installed
LAN-Requester and TCP/IP Services
--Reboot--
Now here is the Problem:
Every now and then I get the Error Message:

ifconfig:ioctl (SIOCDIFADDR) no such interface
Continue --> PRESS ENTER

This is not the exact Message but it should look like this, I translated it from German
It happens every 2-5 reboots anyone got a clue??

I just had a look at the LEDs on the cards, when the Error message is shown the Green Led blinks, when no Error message is shown the yellow LED blinks or sometimes, not very often, the Green LED is acually on

Please Help

Have you configured TCP/IP local settings?

If not, that is what I would do.

Yes as far as I can tell I have done that, and still no effect, even if the systems boot up without a Errormsg and only the Green LED is shining on the Card I still can not ping the other Computer

Can you ping loopback? 127.0.0.1?

If not, then TCP/IP or adapter not working...

Why the different LEDs.. I would consult NIC manual.

Also, from my recollection Token-Ring, you need to "close" the ring. Is that right?

I have activated the loopback and can ping 127.0.0.1 and to the closing of Token Ring I will have to look in to that.
I have read up on the Led's and I'll have to look in to that aswell.

Try reinstalling MPTS the install sets up the protocol.ini files for you.

VERY important to make sure ALPS/MPTS has the correct NIC setup (i.e. card type card number, etc.

also, use the TCP/IP configuration utility (tcpcfg.exe????).

That walks you through the TCP/IP configuration process for multiple adapters.
It seems like the latest MPTS would actually read the protocol.ini in the LAPS / MPTS directory.

It has been a VERY long time. Last installs I did were in 1998 with CIDs and a load system I originally built back in 1994. I haven't touched OS/2 since 1998.

It sounds like a problem you'd normally see with multiple adapter cards (twin tailed, with one card on one network, the other card on another. Never did much with loop back, I hoofed around a MAU in my "pack".

You have to have the LAN cards "itemized" properly in the tcpstart.cmd file also. That can cause you proboems.

The first few characters on the line for "each instance of NICS must have the proper number of the NIC to start properly.

Maybe This will point you in the right direction.

Good Luck and hope this helps.
