Hi,
I have two IDE HDD's. One 8.4GB on 4GB. Win98 is installed on the 8GB drive with FAT32 and the 4GB drive is blank.
Is it possible to install OS/2 to the 4GB drive and leave my Win98 drive intact? The installation program tells me there is not enough space to install on Drive C. I assume this is because it is formatted to FAT32.
Thanks.

Andy,
Yes, that's possible. Although I can't account for the specific error you are getting, I know that if you work with drives of that size you will need newer versions of the OS/2 device drivers that are used to access hard disks. The files are: OS2DASD.DMD and IBM1S506.ADD, and I would also get the up to date CD driver IBMIDECD.FLT.
You should be able to get this files from an OS/2 service pack. Pick one from 30 onwards. Put the above files onto the OS/2 install disk 1.

Also, add the following statement into the config.sys on install disk 1:
SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1This ensures that the install routine will copy the updated HD drivers from the floppy disk onto the hard disk during the install, rather than taking the files from the CD.

Hi, Andy,
I think you are right, OS/2 wants access to drive C: during
installation, because it puts some install logs there. On this
machine there is a IBMINST directory with a small tree
under it, containing about 9k of logging. Silly, innit? What to do? I don't really know. Tricky that Warp 3 is so
much older than W98 and can't r/w FAT 32. Perhaps there
is some IFS driver you can put on the install disk? Or
maybe wait for the "refresh" version that was heralded the
other day (see ZDNet: Sm@rt Reseller - IBM To Update
OS/2 Client
http://www.zdnet.com/sr/stories/news/0,4538,2434120,00.html
) Another way might be to hide the FAT32 partition during
install, but that would lead to problems if it is later
unhidden, because all drive names would then change.Good luck!
Roland

Andy:
You'll need to get the latest disk device drivers from:
http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/index.htmGet file IDEDASD.exe and follow the instructions to the letter.
You must also follow the "advanced" install path in order to install on other than the "C" drive.
