Hi, I'm new to OS2. This may be a simple question, but I'm not sure where else to look.

I have a system running OS2 warp. I need to transfer data from that computer to a system that runs windows2000. If I hook up a CD burner to the OS2 system, can a windows2000 system read the data off that CDR? The file is in ASCII.

thanks for any help!

Yes, but you will need some extra hair to get burning to work in OS/2... took me a while to get it to work.

Is there any resources on the net to show me how to set up a CD burner with OS2?

Also, has anyone gotten a USB (and even better a USB 2.0) CD burner to work in OS2? The only software I've seen for CD burning in OS2 is with SCSI drives.

Is USB cd-burning possible?

You can use RSJ's CD-Writer software:

http://www.rsj.de/stage/en/cdwriter/cd_os2.asp

This is commercial and supports ATAPI/IDE. It mounts a new filesystem so you just drag and drop your files into a folder.

Alternatively, go to http://www.os2world.com
I think that there is a link to free software from there (it's more involved though)

Good luck,
Jean-Yves

Thanks for the responses...but a question...

does OS/2 already come with drivers for CD-burners? I was looking at one of the Lite On drives (www.liteonit.com) because it's one of the few drives that specifically says supports OS2. However, I don't believe that it comes with drivers for OS2...

is this correct?

thanks

Can't remember if Warp 4 came with drivers (it does come with a CD full of device drivers, but not sure whether that includes CD/R or CD/RW).

eComStation (the new OEM version of OS/2) comes with rudimentary support for burners, but in either case you're likely to need to update the drivers and possibly a nice GUI front end.
The free DANI suite of drivers provide the driver support (I think), but you also need the burning software mentioned before.

Actually, I'm in the same situation, I've got a CD/RW but have not yet configured it for eCS (works fine as a CD-Rom at the moment).

As I don't have USB, I wouldn't know on that issue.

Try http://www.ecomstation.nl and then navigate to the support forums. These are very active technical support forums where the experts hang out, and they have solved lots of issues for me. It's eCS but I'm sure that they'd answer any OS/2 questions too if you asked nicely ;-)

Yes, CD burning gets involved with OS/2... like *nix.

Here are some things to help out:

http://www.os2ezine.com/20000516/cdburning.html

I've gotten the data burning to work, but not the audio burning to work with the CD/2.

I've been able to get the cd audio to work with RSJ, but not the data burning to work...

go figure!

Make sure you have USB drivers installed and working in OS/2 first!

Michael, OS/2 isn't *that* partial about drivers as other operating systems. All of the modern CD-writers are compliant to a standard and therefore share a common interface.
Have a look at RSJ http://www.rsj.de for commercial software or - if you are more of the adventurous type: try an OS/2-port of cdrecord (which is available at Hobbes and search for cdrecord). There are graphical front-ends for cdrecord as well like http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/mmedia/cd/cd-r/audiocdcreator_052.zip
-
or, you can always stay with the infamous other OS, that asks for a driver if you plug in a new power cord ;-)

My experience has been fantastic with OS/2 burning. I have an HP 9100 CD-RW, and when the software that came with it for Winblows couldn't do something, I looked to the OS/2 community. I found a demo of RSJ CD-Writer, installed it, and burned cd's in about 10 minutes. This was an ATAPI/IDE drive, of course, so I couldn't tell you about USB drives.

In the end, with a little research, I think you'll find out that like everything else, OS/2 does it cheaper, faster and easier. (Sounds like NASA's motto)

I'll vote for CDRECORD and AUDIOCREATOR for CD-burning. AUDIOCREATOR is just the frontend for CDRECORD.

Though it only seems to support SCSI drives, Daniella got drivers that are able to fake your ATAPI drives into SCSI.

Works like a charm.

USB I don't know about.
