I really need help from someone. I am now downloading OS/2 Warp 4 from a friend of mine. But the problem is .. Can i install OS/2 Warp 4 on my old 486 pc?
here the specs of my old pc: CPU:486 RAM:64MB CD-ROM: 1 internal & 1 external floppy: 1.44
Your specs look ok so far, although, I don't know if you will be able to install from the external CDROM.
How big is your HDD? The original Warp v4 driver probably won't install to a greater than 8Gb HDD, but then again your 486 systems BIOS probably can't handle a HDD that large either.
Are the CDROMs SCSI or IDE? If your are using SCSI drives, what SCSI HBA adaptor are you using? How fast are your CDROMs? If they are faster than 8X you'll probably have to update the install drivers.
I have two HDDs on my old pc. C: = 300MB D: = 500MB
do you think its anough to install it on D: ? My internal CDROM is SCSI.. dont know about the external. I dont think both of them are faster then X8, they are pretty old.
Im going to make the startup disks now My pc wont boot from the CDROM well i dont think the CD is selfboot :)
i will post more when im done install warp 4 later
You can obtain updated Warp 4 installation diskettes form Norloff's OS2BBS. Search for WARP4IST.ZIP or older files: DISKINST.ZIP or W4UPDATE.ZIP . These files are newer versions of the WARP 4.0 installation disk 1 + 2 (2000). See website, " http://www.os2bbs.com/ ".
You may want to reverse the order of the harddrives and install v4 to the 500Mb HDD. V4 needs up to 500Mb depending on the install.
Check your SCSI HBA and make sure that you've got drivers for it on our install diskettes.
The boot disk doesnt seems to work. i have tried 'warpist.zip' and 'Diskinst'. I have tried both but my pc said a a message like this: OS/2?!?!?!?!?! OS/2?!?!?!?!?!
please help me.. and please reply my old question above also
Hobbes is another OS/2 resource that you should visit at: " http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/ ".
Can you install Warp V4 from V3?
I don't think so. I recall that there will be issues with locked files. You should be able to boot the V4 install from the three installation floppies and install over V3 to save your setting et cetera, but I was always unhappy with the resulting desktop. I prefer to do a clean install.
There might be a way to install V4 from a maintainance partition and there is a way to burn a bootable updated Warp V4 installation CD but given your 486 its likely that either of those two steps would be overkill.
Given larger modern HDDs, I prefer to do the base install to a 1Gb or 2Gb HPFS partition and then install the programs to a much larger JFS partition. But you would need either the V4.52 Convience Pak or eComStation V1.0 to format an OS/2 JFS partition.
When I come back from Mass I'll try to find some time to check and think about what is on diskette #0 (that is diskette 1 of 3) that could go wrong. But I am worried about your SCSI HBA. Can you identify your HBA for me.
There are three Warp 4 installation diskettes: disk 0 = Installation diskette disk 1 = Diskette 1 disk 2 = Diskette 2
They need to be inserted in the following order: disk 0, then disk 1, then disk 2
Disk 0 loads the OS/2 kernal.
Disk 1 installs basic device drivers which are required to operate the IDE bus and SCSI bus. I'd guess that your having a problem with the SCSI bus. Either the SCSI HBA driver for your SCSI card is missing or it is the wrong version of the driver.
It looks as though someone is going to have to open up your case and read the SCSI HCA card in order to identify it.
If you choose to try that yourself, please be sure to disconnect your the power supply from your case and to ground yourself properly. We don't want any damage to you or to your motherboard ;-)
