Depends on when you get the error messages... Check your disks first.
I'd like to know if your install is on floppies or CD-ROM.

These error message almost always means that OS/2 cannot find the OSBOOT file wether it is booting from the hard disk or from a floppy. Normally caused by damaged FAT or corruption on the drive.

i tried install from floppies; it worked flawlessly on some other boxes. i guess it must be the floppy drive on this one that is making me problems ... it usualy refuses to write to some poor floppies, but does not make any problems reading them ... these os2 install floppies are the first :) or does the install try to write something to the disks?

Dude, it may also be your hard drive. OS/2 v3 doesn't have total large disk support. If you have a disk that exceeds the normal DOS/OS2 limitations it when OS/2 tries to access the HDD on startup it will give you boot errors for not being able to access it. This is probably the case if it boots up to the Install screen but no boot partition is found. If this is the case see what options are available to booting Large drives to limited OSes like OS/2, DOS and Win95.
