Comment:

I seem to be having a problem getting OS/2 Warp 4 installed on my larger hard drives. No matter what I do it refuses to work on my 13gb and 20gb drives.

I've updated the floppies with the latest drivers from IBM, even tried using danis506, but nothing seems to work. I've tried it on three different systems, but I always get an error that the device cannot be found, or something like that. It just can't see the drive.

I wonder if there's some sort of issue with Western Digital drives and OS/2??

On two of the systems the bios doesn't support the capacity of the drives, and I had to use ez-bios. I've also tried it without ez-bios installed.

On top of that, I haven't had any luck installing on a system which does fully support the drives.

Two of the computers are IBM PC-300GL's and the third is a generic system.

So basically I'm out of options. I've tried everything I can find online, and nothing works.

If anyone has any ideas on what to try next, I'd apprecaite it! Because I'm out of options right now.

The sad part is, I love OS/2! I've been a user for five years now. So I hope there's some sort of soultion out there...

I've never had success with Ez-Bios... I avoid it like the plague now.

See if there is an upgrade for your bios to support larger drives.

If not, then you will have to work within your limits, i.e. small drive. This or get a newer machine that can support larger drives.

Here is my experience:

I had an old AT Tyan Board that didn't support large IDE drives until I reflashed the BIOS. I was at a 12 gb drive first, then needed more space, so I bought a 40 gb. After I flashed the bios, the memory limit for OS/2 was "stuck" at 64 mb. I checked and my BIOS had that OS/2 memory limit allowed. Turned out that it was a bug in the BIOS.

After trying to get it back (I would rather deal with a smaller IDE drive than smaller RAM limits), the MB is dead. It forced me to upgrade. Good thing, though... I love my new machine.

Good luck with your endeavor.

Does the install go ok first then you reboot and it doesn't load? If so run the ez bios software again and reboot Had a freind with asimilar problem with win98.

Also how about partitioning the hdds first with partition magic, add boot manager and make all partitions accept the one you intend to install os2.

Does it install? Nope, I get the error before it can even start the installation program. I never get that far...

And Peter, I also tried it in a newer system which fully supports the capacity of both drives. Didn't make a difference, I can't get it to work.

I've installed WARP 3 on 16GB drives. Can't remember if I partitioned it first with Partition Magic or directly from the boot disks.
Don't forget the 1024 cylinder limit. In LBA mode, the max boot partition size is approx 8GB (assuming 255 heads, HPFS etc).
Apologies if you're already aware of this.
Incidently, NT4 also has this limitation.

Typically, if I see that message, IBM1s506 can't read the drive (i.e. too big), which means DANIS is not being started.

Make sure your Config.sys refers to DANIS instead of IBM and you have COPYFROMFLOPPY=1 in your config.sys.

IBM have a solution for this problem on their os/2 page.
