Thank you all for posting on this forum, it helps a virgin OS2'r like me. I am having problems installing OS2 on a 486/100MHz computer, 16Mb Ram, 408Mb hdd, VGA video. The hard disk has nothing on it, freshly fdisk/formatted for FAT using a Win95 boot disk, one partition. There are no peripherals installed except for 3.5 and 5.25 floppy drives. I need to create a backup computer for a scientific instrument currently running OS2,2.11. I have followed numerous examples but still the same hang up. The install(ver2.11) goes without errors until disk 3, then nothing. No error, no activity, it just stops installation. I also have version 3 on floppies, tried it and installation stops with no error on disk 2. I dont mind doing the research/learning/reading about OS2, but I need some guidance on where to go from here. Thanks for your help. Greg

No, I guess Im not sure if its FAT32, I just assumed it was FAT16. The hdd is formatted from a Win95 boot disk. Ill look into it. Thanks.

I am not familiar with V2, but do you get the opportunity to format and fdisk the HDD from the floppy install disks, or are you accepting the "easy installation" (that's what it is called on V3?

No, it does not give me the oppurtunity to format with the floppy install disks. The OS2.v3 installation stops at the disk 2 prompt. By stopping, I mean it displays the "insert diskette 2" screen and does not change after disk2 is inserted. Prior to this, I use the V3 installation disk to boot up, choose "advanced installation", fdisk one primary partition 407Mb, and set installable. Thanks for your response. Could this be a floppy disk drive issue? Still searching if you have any ideas...

Have you tried recreating the disks? The CD-Rom Warp 4 will let you recreate the disks. Just run mkdisks(?) from the CD, and have 3 floppies ready to go.
It could just be that the 3rd disk is bad.
I'd recommend wiping the HD out too, and letting the installation partition and format the drive when it reaches that point in the install.
I just had a problem installing Win98 (yecccchhhh) with an eCS partition. The problem was in using LVM to create the partition for Windows. When I used FDISK from Win98, everything installed nicely

I dont have a CD. I have ver.2 and ver.3 both on floppy disks. Besides, there is no CD drive. The HD was wiped clean and I would love to allow the installation software fdisk and format but it never gets to that point in the installation before stalling. Thanks.

I've just gone through the installation procedure from V3 floppies (using VPC).
On disk 1 (which is the 2nd disk!) I get 2 options: Easy installation, or Advanced installation. Choose Advanced installation to go to FDISK where you can specify the partition size and make installable and set volume name.
If you dont get this far maybe your disk 1 or 2 is corrupt.
Keep us posted.

SOLVED! No problems with disks or hdd formatting. The turbo button was the issue. When not in turbo mode the installation proceeded without error! Thanks for all your efforts and replies! Now I can continue learning how to use OS2.

NO. It is not solved. I think I just got lucky once when installing. I believe disk 2 is corrupted. Any idea how I can get another or can someone help with this disk? CD drive is not available on these machines so I have to do it by floppy. Thanks, Greg

Hello,
Depending on the HD or installation partition size, you may need a more recent version of IDEDASD driver.
Best is to get Daniela's (at least her superb DANIS506.ADD) drivers from hobbes (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/, search for "dani") and replace IBM1S506.ADD with this driver.
Furthermore, please keep in mind that your version of OS/2 will not install on any partition that goes beyond cylinder 1023. :)
Good to know may be that on the Web (IBM, etc.) you can find image files of renewed Installation Floppies of most (if not all) versions of OS/2. If recent enough they will have the newer IDEDASD drivers included.
Good luck!
JH

Thanks very much for all your help. However, Im almost giving up. This shouldnt be so difficult or take so much time. The new driver you suggested was 3x the size and would not fit on the diskette. So what files do I delete and make this install disk work with the new driver? Ive tried many things. I dont have a floppy drive supporting higher density formats so I cant create new disks. Im still thinking it is something with the floppy disk, drive or driver. I do get a specific track error when trying to copy disk2 so it may be corrupted. But I cant get or find a new one. IBM support says "we dont support that version." So, ebay to find a new version 3 box? This box was still shrink wrapped when I opened it 2 weeks ago. What am I missing? Thanks again for listening to my frustration with OS2, ver3 NOT installing on a 486/100MHz, 408Mb hdd, 16Mb Ram, VGA. Seemingly so simple...GE
