Os/2 hangs at startup

I just installed os/2 2.1 on a 486dx pc with 4 mb of ram. When I turn on the pc it hangs at the os/2 splash screen for some reason. I then have to push the reset button & then it functions as normal. Has anyone experienced this or know what the problem is? It then puts a pile of files on my hard drive that says file0001.chk. This happens every time I turn it off & back on. It hangs & then I have to reboot to get it to work. I know there is nothing wrong with the hard drive. I have ran disk utilities & I was running Windows 95 on the pc with no problems before switching to os/2. Otherwise I like the OS.
If I remember correctly (as it has been a long time)W95 left some hidden files on the hard drive , even if drive was reformatted. That may cause some conflict with W3.1 in OS/2 and a bootup.
