I would like to know how I can install OS/2 on my Win98 system. I am currently running Win98, althouth I have not installed DOS, I only have Win98. I have a partition I can use for OS/2, but will I be able to switch back to Win98 with no problems. Is there a way that I can dual boot back to Win98 without installing DOS or getting a boot manager? Sorry, forgot to tell you what version of OS/2 I want to install. I have OS/2 Warp 3 (blue spine).

Hi, OS/2 Friend!
Glad to see so many people wanting to try out the REAL NT4.1... sorry, Win2000 !-)

Myself, I have very little hands-on experience with W98, but IIRC it is also DOS-based although the file system may be incompatible with good old Warp3 if you installed FAT 32. This can cause problems during installation, as OS/2 wants to put some log files on drive C: (see another Warp3 install message from Andy here).

But OS/2 comes with a Boot Manager, and it will easily set it up during installation. No xtra charge! I think the best strategy is to put OS/2 on its own partition or even disk, else chkdsk and other prog's might destroy the extended attributes that make an important part of OS/2's extremely valuable object-oriented design. But if your W98 does not use FAT 32 I can see no reason why it shouldn't be possible to dual-boot (in DOS!). Personally, however, I think HPFS is a so much better file system than FAT that I prefer it.

You do not mention your disk(s) size or layout. Remember that BIOS needs all bootable partitions to be contained within the first 1023 cylinders! Also, you may have to get an upgrade of some drivers if the disk is bigger than 4 or 8 GB. Find IDEDASD.* at ibm's website. Comes with good instructions. I can't remember the exact URL or filename right now.

Welcome!
