Subject: Is Windows needed? OS: Windows ME CPU/Ram: Celeron 400

Comment: I'm thinking about buying OS/2 for an old computer I have. I know that you need windows in order to run windows-based applications. But is Windows necessary to install OS/2? If I don't care about using Windows applications, can I set up a "pure" OS/2 machine? The version I'm looking at is 3.0 Warp.

Reply: (edit)only on SOME version of OS\2 WARP you will need Windows 3.1x to get the "WIN-OS2" feature that will run 16-bit Windows apps. I know some versions of 3.0 and 4.0 have it built in. I got this special copy thats 5 CDs with tons of add-ons, bonus pack, and IBMworks. and it has that Win32's APIs that MS made for Windows 3.1. for OS\2 Warp 4.5 (eComstation), you dont need it, and it can run 32-bit apps right out of the box.

Reply: (edit)yeah, I got red spine 3.0 (cd, floppy), 3.0 connect, and 4.0 which need a copy of Windows 3.11. but my blue spine copy of OS\2 Warp 4 has it built in with Win32 APIs.

Reply: (edit)I might point out you only need win3.1 for Red Spine if you intend to run Win3.1 proggies otherwise it is not needed. I'm after a Blue Spine retail pack of OS/2 v4 but they seem like hen's teeth to get here in New Zealand.

Reply: (edit)My blue spine is some kinda of special one. It has bonus Pack, IBM Works, Lotus Notes, App Sampler CD, Win-OS2 built in, latest Win32 APIs(same was Win32 for 3.1). eComstation is better. Its just 4.0 reploaded, milllions of drivers, Win32 support, and other cool stuff. I snagged me a copy and also got a copy of "OS\2 Warp 4.5 Server" which Im not sure if its a beta or if its just eCom. I think eCom needs like a 133Mhz, 32MB RAM to run, but 4.0 needs a 486DX, 16MB RAM, and 200MB HD space.

Reply: (edit)Pesonnally I wouldn't run v4 on anything less than a P133 with 32 megs of ram. It's damn slow on anything slower I've found. v3 is more suitable. You would have gotten HPFS386 with AS then?

Reply: (edit)Ive ran Warp 4.0 on a 100Mhz with 32MB RAM and its nice. Ive ran Warp v3 Connect on a 486DX2 66Mhz with 40MB RAM and its nice. Ive used Warp 3.0 on a 386SLC 20Mhz (40Mhz 486SLC2 overdrive) with 12MB RAM to test, but it was slow. Warp 3Connect ran fine on a 66Mhz 486DX2 with 40MB RAM though. Ive havnt tried Warp 4.5 Server or eComstation yet, I may put it on something like a 150Mhz-ish with 64MB RAM. still undecided. I always like to test it under minimum requirments and then see what I need from there. or gestimate, which hardly works. 98SE on a 166Mhz with 64MB RAM?! ha! 2000 runs better. I thought the other way around, so much for my guestimating.
