Is OS/2 better than Windows 3.1???
I have a machine with Windows NT and Windows 3.1.
I am bored of Win31, and I found OS/2 in a website and I don't know how it is...
Does it have a user interface or is it just command line???
Thanx!El-Trucha

Ohh...ok!
But is it graphic or a command prompt? (because command prompts bore me...)PS: What is Virtual PC???

Its grahpic, and better than Windows 3.11.
It lacks networking, but I think if you try IE 16-bit with dialer or probly AOL for WIndows 3.1 it may work for dialup needs. There is a Network client for it, but isnt all that good becuse the TCp/IP doesnt work all that good.

Ok...I will try it then...(the only problem is that it comes in more than 20 diskettes, and I don't have that much!) Is there a CD-ROM version of it???

OS/2 v2.x is way better than Windows 3.1. While Windows is a graphical interface for DOS, OS/2 is a true operating system. It's supports true multitasking. It can run DOS programs better than DOS. It runs Windows 3.1 (Win-OS/2) within OS/2. Unlike Windows 95, which also runs these programs (with the same limitations of Windows 3.1/DOS), the OS/2 virtuals machines runs these programs in the 386 protected mode, giving these programs 32-bit protection. OS/2 is way stabler than Windows 3.1. Hell yeah for OS/2.

Ok!! I'll try it then!!
Now, I have some questions;
1. Is there a CD-ROM version???
2.How much space does version 2.1 take???Ohh no! I have 2 go to class...(I'm at school!!!)
I'll continue this message later...sorry...
Bye and thanx!!!
El-Trucha

Well, as I was saying today:
1. Is there a CD-ROM version???
2. How much space does version 2.1 take???
3. Can it open Macintosh files??
4. What is "32-bit protection"???
Thanx all!!El-Trucha

Unlikely....the oldest I saw was Os\2 Warp 3.0 on floppys.
Version 2.1 shouldnt take up more than 25MB.
No, becuase noone WANTS to open MacOS files.

I'm back. OS/2 cannot open MacOS files. MacOS and OS/2 are NOT the same thing. The only thing that can run *.bin files on a Mac is a Macintosh (Real or Emulated). Of course, Macintosh was made by Apple Computers, while OS/2 was made by IBM. Excuse me if these sentences don't make since (since i'm half-tired). There are no OS/2 2.1 CD-ROMS (Except for the high-end corporate editions). The only way to install this operating system is if you actually have 23 empty disk on hand. Long live OS/2 and the Workplace Shell

All the 2.0/ 2.1 developers cdroms had full installs of os2 on them, i've got a cd of os/2 2.1 right in front of me..but yeah , it's not common...
To answer the original question...i think you have to take more than technical considerations of an OS into account, or we'd all agree that unix is the best. period.
Usability is a big factor, and, frankly, OS/2 didn't really become usable in a comparable way to other OS's until ver.4, which is why it's still really tough to find an inexpensive copy of 4 out there even now, as that's (in my opinion) when it really began to shine as an OS ..
Example...WfWgroups added ethernet support around the same time as OS/2 3 still refused to accept there was such a thing as com ports 3 and 4..and you had to get the special 'connect' version and hunt around for ages to find drivers, and then still you were lucky to get a modem hooked up alone.
These probs disappeared by ver.4 tho..and i've been hunting around for a copy for quite some time..alas, unsuccesfully :(

I have OS/2 v4 if ya want it. I am using OS/2 WSeB instead.

For the latest version of OS/2, go to www.ecomstation.com. IBM still offers it for sale, but not unless you are a big company. ECS ( ecomstation ) is at version 1.1 and 1.2 is due out buy the end of the year.
