Hello all,

This is my first post on Computing.net and I am about at my wits end with the installation of OS/2 Warp 3 (Red Box, Diskette Version).

I have updated the installation disk 1 with the files included with IDEDASD.EXE including IBM1S506.ADD yet every time I am asked to insert disk 1 after the installation disk, the system reboots/crashes when loading IBM1S506.ADD. The drive I am attempting to install Warp 3 on is a 4GB Maxtor IDE drive. I have searched extensively here and via Google, but nothing seems to help.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mark

I would have expected IBM1S506 to be able to handle a 4 GB drive. However, I suggest you download & substitute DANIS506, which I've had extremely good success with and with drives much larger than 4 GB. The only thing is, I've only used DANI in Warp 4. I assume it also works in Warp 3, but a little research might save you a lot of headaches later on.

I'm not sure what the current version is & I'm sure you can find multiple download points by googling DANIS506, but here is a little info I had stored on my HDD in the same directory as the DANIS506 download:

Dani1S506 v1.7.5 - 2005-12-03

IBM1S506 replacement, supports Intel, VIA, Ali, SiS, CMD, Promise, Cyrix, HPT, AMD, Artop, SMSC, ServerWorks, Opti, Nvidia, NatSemi and SiliconImage, SerialATA, disk capacities up to 2TiB.

Thanks for the tip. I loaded DANIS506.ADD and was able to get past the crash on disk1. Just for my own edification, what did you doo about the "snoop" file for IBM1S506.ADD when you used DANIS506.ADD? Did you remove the snoop file or does DANIS provide one?

Thanks,
Mark

Thanks for the advice. After getting this far, it looks like my Warp 3 diskettes are corrupt :( Looks like I will be trying a Warp 4 install.

Of course, I have over questions with the Warp 4 install, but that is for another thread.

Mark

Sorry to hear that your Warp 3 diskettes are corrupt. I guess it pays to back up installation diskettes, too, but truthfully I don't have backups of mine either. I hope you already have Warp 4 diskettes.

I'm not sure what the "snoop" file you mentioned is. If you provide a little more info, perhaps it'll jog my memory & I can respond. I wouldn't be surprised if DANI had a "snoop" substitute. I use her ATAPI & OS2DASD.DMD replacements too. These drivers help me keep my hardware current and with better performance & stability as well as more flexibility.
