Hello All,

I was told that IBM will cease or already cease support for OS/2. If IBM will cease support, does anyone know the actual date?

well, it may be hard to believe but OS/2 Warp _is_ still sold and supported by IBM. Today, the most recent entry on the support web page dates from 4th of April 2002:
http://www-4.ibm.com/software/os/warp/support/
By subscribing to IBM's SoftwareChoice you get access to additional add-ons to Warp. Here, the latest entry dates from 9th of April 2002:
http://www-3.ibm.com/software/os/warp/swchoice/

So, please, have a look at the manufacturers web pages before spreading rumours about the untimely demise of OS/2 Warp.
These rumours are neither new nor very original.

In 1999 IBM sounded the death knell for OS/2 and it's related products.

In summary the path to the grave for OS/2 is as follows:

Development on product enhancements was frozen around 99/00

Hardware and device driver support available till end 2004

Defect support available till end 2006

Thank you, Keith. Now this is what I call a truly slow death! ;-)
As for the development and product enhancement being 'frozen' I recommend you take a closer look at the links I posted above. Since 1999/2000 we have seen many good things come our way like support for USB, the fall of the 512MB per process limit (thus enabling project 'ODIN' to do fabulous things see http://odin.netlabs.org/), a decent memory detection above 64MB, support for Pentium IV, convenience packs 1 and 2 ....
So, as long as IBM keeps on selling, supporting and enhancing OS/2 Warp they may call it what ever they want :-)

Hi Armin, agree that there has been some development on the product but you will notice that this has all taken place around the "support" area and has not added any new functionality to the product set.

IBM will continue to support the latest “e business” initiatives i.e later releases on Java for OS/2 but this is where it stops.

The last true development for new functionality was slated for “Workspace on Demand Three” but this was merely “vapour-ware” and nothing ever came of it. I believe that IBM is serious regarding their intention to dispose of OS/2 as it simply cannot compete against Mr Gates.

From what I can gather there is still a fairly large installed based (especially within Europe) and what pressure these companies will put on IBM to continue with OS/2 remains to be seen.

My experience with the product has been VERY positive and I will be sorry to see the end of it.

Keith, I completely agree with this. IBM would love to have us all run away from OS/2 so they could - finally - pull the plug.
However, there are many big companies the world over who made enormous investments into OS/2 and built there businesses around OS/2 software. Since these companies are of the 'true blue' kind (read: banks, insurance companies) with multi-million-dollar support contracts IBM had to extend the end-of-life and end-of-support dates. So let's enjoy it, while it lasts and stop whining.
Interesting, isn't it: you won't find people complaining that Microsoft doesn't support Win95 any longer - everyone seems glad they stopped producing this piece of sh..

Hi,I'm an "new-comer"who just discovered this kind of softwares,after I was given,an old set of Ast-Bravo 12 Lap-Top computer,and complete with,installed Os2-2.2.1{?}a couple years back.My machine was stolen,along with the copies,and all back-ups,from a friend's car.I have,since,been given 2 old lap-tops;one with bad bios battery(?)and,b&w,an"Action-Note"by Epson.It has corrupt Dos-5/6 etc.on it,doesn't work too good.
I have,several sets,the boxes,and,un-complete sets of install discs,for OS2-Warp3 and,Os2-20...
My questions are:
If boxes{"Red"&"Blue"}have an # printed on them...AND,I obtain down-loaded or copied Install-disks{18 or 25?}on floppies:
CAN I Install from other sets,floppies,then type in,box #'s as,register liscence/serial # for install to start up.
Q.#2:
If bios reverts to '80's dates,never re-freshes,can I use,"Demo"cd images of "Warp-3" to install,since,machine will never change date @ start-up;I have to,manually set dates at boot-up?...
IF any of you out there have Ideas about this,I'm pretty much at,wit's end.
I've gotten used to being colour-blind,so,the B&W screen still is not an handicap to useing the Epson,it may be an 386 or 486,I don't know.
It doesnt have,an C.D.,of course.
Thanks for reading this,
"Randi"

Hi guys (using the non-gender specific form), I have reason to believe that OS/2 will throw in the towel, eventually !
I have been appointed to look into migrating my company’s current OS/2 platform (which includes “Workspace on Demand”) to an alternative operating system.
I have done some initial investigations and the “safest” option appears to be to migrate to one of Microsoft’s operating systems.

This will allow access to the most universal product set and support infrastructures within the client environment but it does come at a tremendous cost.

Other avenues I’m exploring are Citrix, Linux, Vmware, Virtual PC,Solaris etc.

I’m looking for an innovative and elegant solution that will cater for my user’s requirements and will provide a cost effective way forward.

Is there anyone out there who is either faced with a similar challenge or has completed an exercise like this who is willing to communicate and/or share experiences and thinking with me?
