After I install OS/2 Warp 4 and partiton the drive for two other operating systems, how do I tell MS-DOS 7.1 or PC-DOS 2000 which partition to use?

Theoretically, you can set the other partitions as Primary and install DOS there.

Did you install Boot Manager? (If not, what method are you using to switch between OS's?)

Also, what specifically do you need MSDOS 7 or PCDOS 2000? If there is no direct hardware access (that cannot be virtualized), you can run either one under OS/2 in a VDM. Instructions are included in OS/2 on how to do that.

I want to install a whole bunch of operating systems.

According to the instructions I have, first you install the boot manager, then two bootable partitions, then a big partition that's visible to everything, and put OS/2 in a logical drive at the beginning of it. You can put AIX at the end of it(it makes its own partition).

If I could, I'd install my Windows 98SE upgrade under Win-OS/2 3.1, but I've heard that won't work. I'd also install Windows NT4 and use the NT OS loader after picking OS/2 from the boot manager to triple boot OS/2, Windows 98, or NT4. Or would 98 run under OS/2?

Since none of that would work, (would it?) I'm going to waste one of the bootable partitions on DOS, 98SE, and NT4 instead of putting Linux there like I'd like to. >:(

I shure hope someone tells me I heard wrong and I can install 98SE under OS/2 and stick NT4 beside it.

You can have many different operating systems, and install them in pretty much any order.

1. You should create a DOS diskette with at least the files SYS, BOOTBART.EXE, and copies of the latest version of NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM, plus, eg free-dos fdisk.

2. The first primary partition should be a 496MB fat partition. This stops windows converting it to fat32. Use this for boot and for DOS 16 stuff. (DR-DOS bug)

3. Multibooted OS/2 needs a bootmanager partition, and install it into a different primary partition with HPFS.

4. The extended partition should exist, and contain at least (a)

a. A 496 MB fat16 partition (DOS bug)
-> install Windows NT 3.51 here.
b. A 1024MB fat32 partition (Win 9x)
c. A 2048 MB ntfs partition for NT4
-> must install SP6a before booting to other NT
d. Partitions for 2k, xp, 2k3.

NT3.51 should be installed in a fat partition, because the later nt versions make ntfs unreadable.

NT4 can be installed whenever, but SP6 must be applied before booting into 2k or xp.

NT2K has different permissions to the root directory, which will cause the install to fail if formatted in XP, but the permissions not set to grant all. Win2k destroys the boot sector of boot manager, so you should get a servcie pack > 2 on it quickly. Use OS/2 to restote the boot sector

If the NT's are installed out of order, ye need to boot dos diskette/key, and restore the ntldr and ntdetect.com from the latest version of NT.

You may also need to reactivate the OS/2 bootmanager. Note that you can create a bootsector for bootmanager with bootpart, and include OS/2 in the NT boot menu.

MS-DOS and Win9x can be installed at any time, use bootpart to link these into the WINNT boot.ini loader.

bootpart.exe from http://www.winimage.com/ is free.
