Comment: After last night's message "Background Woes" (qv) I had the schemes working for a short time. I then tried to install the correct video driver for my video adapter instead of relying on the default VGA driver. OS/2's "Selective Install" tells me it is a Cirrus 5442. So, I was asked to put in disc 7 followed by all the following discs up to 13, plus the Printer and display driver disc 1. After this I rebooted, only to be given the message "The system was unable to create the DOS environment, DOS cannot start", and I was now back on VGA resolution and my background schemes have stopped selecting again. If I go back to Selective Install and change my video driver, I have to go through the same sequence of discs 7-13 plus the printer and display discs, to be greeted with the same "DOS cannot start" and non-changeable desktop schemes. I should also point out that the DOS error refers only to the OS/2 integral DOS interpreter as I have not installed DOS into the system. Is the DOS environment dependent on video drivers or does it indicate another conflict? How do I get the DOS environment working again and how do I sort out the video error without endlessly repeating the same sequence of installation discs? It seems I am going round in circles and getting nowhere. Tommy.
