OS: Warp 4
CPU/Ram: 333/196
Comment:

After successfully installing networking between my Warp 4 box and NT 4 box, I took the plunge and acquired ADSL service.
Out with my hub and in with a new SMC router. I got the ADSL service established on NT on both my machines (one box
accesses warp and NT thru Boot Manager), but OS/2 proves to be more challenging.

I changed the TCPCFG GUI setting on the Networking tab from "Manually using" to using DHCP. The Routing tab I left
unchanged. On p.1 of the Hostnames tab now appears the IP address of my router; I removed the old domain name of my
previous ISP from the approp. window and left the machine's hostname intact. No changes were made to p. 2 of this tab.

I also installed NETBIOS over TCPIP as I understand this is necessary when using a router.

After a reboot, etc. I was able to communicate on both Netscape and PMMail at ADSLspeed!! I'm certain, but I believe I was
able to communicate PEER to PEER with my NT box at this time. However, after either a reboot on one or the other machine, I
lost both my LAN and ADSL service. I tinkered with the TCPCFG setting repeatedly, using the IP addresses assigned by the
router, etc. but no luck, only the ROUTE: error on boot-up. I then reset the router, destination addresses to their original settings
pre-ADSL). What happened is that the ADSL service is active, but I still can't log on to my other computer. NET USE \\..... does
not work, I get a net0067 error message stating that the other machine cannot be found. I'm really confused at this point and
have run out of combinations to try, other than installing two more NIC's and by-passing the router, but thet's more $$$.

Thanks.

Ignore all of the above; I fixed my problem(s). The culprits were a couple of files and your's truly.

I noticed during my TCPCFG tinkerings that when I entered the destination host name, the old IP address (pre-router) kept appearing, and this was also noticed when I typed in NETSTAT -R, the same old IP addresses would appear. I recalled that there were a couple of files that were updated in my LAN tinkering days, and these are HOSTS and RESOLVE found in \TCPIP\DOS\ETC\. Apparently these settings didn't change when I changed them in the TCPCFG GUI. Let others beware!!

The other problem was my doing. I could ping to my NT box but I couldn't start PEER to PEER service. The reason for this was that I had a problem with NT on that machine and I had to repair it with my ERD. Even though it wasn't a new install, it reconfigured the shares on my NT drives to the default C$, etc. names. If anyone has played with NT, they probably found out that peer to peer does not like this default drive name, you have to give it another one, like "cdrive" etc. In my case, for some reason NT Explorer would map out the drives by their revised names, but Network Neighbourhood couldn't see them. That was the tip-off.

Thanks again to everyone who has helped me in the past.

I am glad you got it fixed.

I can not do a ping on my network PCs unless I have them in my hosts list or within DNS somewhere on the network..
