Subject: Using F$PARSE on a wildcard list

Comment:
Given a file 'name.type' can F$PARSE be used to say yes or no it satisfies a spec in a wildcard spec?

I have a case where I make a file of many many filenames using a DIR Command (with some selection criteria) and then wish to traverse that file splitting it into files of filenames that do match a long list wildcards and those that don't.

I could do this with the original DIR command if there were only a 'few' specs of interest, the trouble is the list of specs is approaching 100 and is subject to change from run to run.

Consequently, I plan to load the specs from an ascii file at run time and then proceed.

Short of preparing my own brute-force parser, I'm wondering if F$PARSE could give me the yes/no answer. I've tried several different combinations and didn't get the results I wanted (or, perhaps, just didn't recognize the answer).

Any thougths would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Geo.
