I was wondering if anyone could reply with a solution to this problem...

Last week, NAV removed some spyware and messed up the Windows login. We
called Dell to see how we could backup all of our personal files, because we
had to re-format the hard drive, and the only way we could backup our files
was if we had a second hard drive.

So I got the craziest idea... We have a USB hard drive, and we wanted to
make it a slave. We disassembled it, and there were extra jumper settings.
After changing the jumpers for an hour, we didn't have any luck making it a
slave drive.

We assembled the drive back together, and now, Windows isn't recognizing the
drive. What I'd like to know is where do I put the jumper so it'll show up
as a USB drive again.

It's a Maxtor 3000LE.

first of all: wrong place. This is a non-Windows forum. Most people here KNOW about computers - and how they work.

Second:
1. You shouldn't have messed with INTERNAL settings, nor would it have been required. Windows would have recognized it as an external device, and you would have been able to use it, without changes.
2. BEFORE changing anything, you should have noted the current settings so you would be able to have it restored completely.
3. If you had to call DELL to find out how to copy personal files, I doubt your knowledge. Ever heard of BACKUP, ZIP, COPY?
Why then try to "solve" a problem that didn't even exist?

Sorry to say: but you messed up your system yourself. Not NAV.

We have had many problems with the Maxtor 30000LE drives and have replaced the hard drives inside them all. The jumpers need to be set to the Cable Select position - you should be able to see a little sticker which shows this on the actual drive - carefully reassemble and let me know how you get on.
Good luck and most of us have at some stage not done what Willem kindly suggested.
