Hi, I am looking to install an external DAT tape drive to my Alpha 4000 server. Given I find the correct drive and cabeling..what has to be done to get the system to recognize the drive?

The bootstrap should autoconfigure all online devices connected to the system.
I presume that you are not planning on plugging it into the SCSI while the system is running. Some devices work correctly in that case, some don't. As an example, the disks that are hot-pluggable can be added to the system by using IO AUTOCONFIGURE from SYSMAN. I do, however, recomment caution when plugging arbitrary new devices.
