Replacing damaged Hard disk with new one

Hi all my harddisk on vax station with open vms ver 5.5 damaged I've mka500 tape drive and a backup copy of the operating system on the tape How can I prepare the new harddisk to restore the operationg system ?

if you've got an image backup try to boot from tape. I am not sure but the command on the boot prompt should be like SET BOOTDEV MKA500: Please find out by using HELP on boot prompt.

This Hesham again Thank you Claus for replying but this is not what I'm asking about my question was : after booting from tape how can I restore my software to the new hard disk and does the operating system discover the new hard disk and how can I prepare the new hard disk is there is some kind of partitioning or formating before restoring the software? thank you

this is complex
firstly did you do a proper system disk backup. if not then reinstall as faster.
VAX /ALPHA will find the hard disk as long at the firmware supports the device (see compaq web site) you will have to initialize the disk and name it temporarily If you did an image backup just restore and it will all go well.
it not then read the manuals on system disk backup and restore and also check out initialize commands to ensure a bootstrap is added correctly.
