OS: Open VMS 7.3
CPU/Ram: 256k
Comment:

Is it possible to run Tomcat 4.0.1 on a Compaq Alpha Server, running OpenVMS version 7.3, without using CSWS. I would like to set Tomcat up like you would do on a Windows machine.

I have unzipped the software in the same way you would on Windows, and I have been looking into setting up a command procedure to mimic the .bat/.sh files that start/stop the application. I suppose I would like to find out if this is possible before I spend a lot of time on it.

Has anyone done this before?

Can Tomcat be run in the same way on an OpenVMS as it is on Windows or do you have to use CSWS?

Has anyone got an example of a command procedure for setup/startup?

Are there other issues that occur further down the line?

Thanks for your help,
Bluespud.

I have no experience with Tomcat stand-alone but I guess it must be able to install it without a webserver. I just wonder how to use it.

First of all: forget about the Windows/Unix stuff and obtain Tomcat for VMS. You _may_ be able to use the plain version (since it is java, it _should_ run on OpenVMS) but you need to be aware of a few things:
* It MUST be installed on an ODS-5 disk
* Installing and using _requires_ some process settings - I don't have them at hand but it has to do with case preservation and some other settings. The VMS installation manual _should_ mention them
* ALL FILES MSUT BE IN STREAM_LF FORMAT. No real VMS-specialist likes it but since SUN is Unix, they seem to think ALL the world is Solaris....
* For the Shell scripts - af any - you could thing of GNV (Gnu's Not Vms) which comes with BASH. Be sure to get the latest version (1.6 AFAIK)

One more thing:
The VMS version comes with a startup procedure for VMS.
