Hello,

Need some help. I have several Alpha 433au work stations running OpenVMS 7.1. I need to upgrades them to OpenVMS 7.2. I already have the 7.2 CD from a 500au. What are the procedures & do I need to purchase a license? Please help.

hello

First, backup your system disk, by booting standalone.

Then, boot with you 7.2 CD, and use Preserve option (I suppose you do not want Initialize)

You should have a look at the doc for upgrading Openvms 8.3
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/83fin...

as the basics concepts still apply, for upgrading Vms 7.1 or any other.

I do not see the point to go to 7.2, may be a better idea is upgrading to 7.3-2, as this version is among the supported versions, while 7.1 or 7.2 are not.

Have a look at
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/73fin...
(search for shows the level of support provided for all possible version pairings)

(search for
5.10 What are the OpenVMS version upgrade paths?)

normanski,

Whether or not you need a license depends on what the underlying arrangements are with HP. Ditto the question of whether or not an upgrade is possible (some add-on software may be version specific).

The upgrade procedures are straightforward, and are fully described in the OpenVMS documentation set, which can be accessed online at http://www.hp.com/go/openvms

Personally, I would be inclined to upgrade to either 8.2 or 8.3. At this point 7.3-2 would be very much a lesser alternative.

Hello Bob & Palm,

Thank you for the input. I think I have successfully upgraded one of the 433au from 7.1 to 7.2 yesterday.

As for going all the way to 8.3, do you think the 433au can take it? Does it mean I would have to update the Firmware as well? What do you think?

Regards
Normanski

normanski,

Updating the console firmware is a straightforward process. Offhand, I do not see why the 433au would have a problem.
