I am trying to get information on how to map to a tape drive on a Vax machine running OpenVMS 7.1 from an Alpha Workstation running OpenVMS 7.2. The Vax machine has a tape drive installed in it that I need to use to install a program on the Alpha machine. I want to know how to map to the tape drive on the Vax machine from the Alpha machine. I can not mount a tape drive on the Alpha machine becasuse it does not have a SCSI card. My experience with VMS is very limited, I am in over my head right now, so details are appreciated.

Hi Gregory,
I think it is not possible to map a tape drive. A remote access for tapes and CDs is not possible. You have to copy from tape to harddrive and then install.
OpenVMS supports sharing of tapes when the 2 machines are in a cluster (via TMSCP). Not, just DECnet or TCP/IP connected. There are some 3rd party device sharing products, like: http://www.i-s-e.com/Products/Deviceshare/deviceshare.htm (No affiliation)
Otherwise, like the last reply, copy to disk, then disk to disk.
